Freicurv is the name given to my next public release wordpress theme. No, dont ask me what does it means; because I don’t know either 
Features
Freicurv is, in my opinion, a simple and elegant looking wordpress theme that is suitable not only for personal use but for various niche of blogs.
Let me just summarize everything.
- Light color layout.
- Fixed-width and can either be made into 3 or 2 columns layout (explained below)
- Widget ready sidebars
- Compatible with all versions of Wordpress including the latest 2.3.1 with tag features
- Asides category ready (explained below)
- Highlighting the author comments - differentiate them from visitors’ comments (explained below)
This theme is tested in Firefox 2+, Opera 9, IE6 and Safari 3(windows) and it works great in all browsers.

Before you read the whole process, take a look at the basic structure of Freicurv to help you understand the explanation better.
1. Preparing for the Asides category
Asides category is a special category of blog post that is, in theory, appearing on the side of the blog. They are not mixed with other blog post; and normally Asides posts are rather very short as in one paragraph or so.
To use this Asides feature in Freicurv, you need to do a little hard work; not really hard actually, only 3 steps. The detail steps and instructions are explained in the readme.txt file, included in the theme package. DO READ IT.
2. Changing About me section and Profile Picture
To edit the default text in the blue box, open the file named intro.php and start writing you biography. I mean, a short one.
To change the profile picture, simply replace the default picture named photo.jpg in the images folder with your own picture. Make sure it is a JPEG format and name it to ‘photo’. (or you can just edit the picture URL in the intro.php file). Default size is 78 x 79px
3. Changing the title image
There’s a file named header_title.psd and header_title.png in the /images/header directory - choose the format you familiar with to edit the header title image. Remove the default text and insert you own. Export it to .jpg format and place it inside the /images directory
4. Highlighting author comment.
View the demo page, you can see that the author comment is styled in different color - more stand out than the other. To get this working, you need to assigned your email address in the comment.php file. Look for the below excerpt:

Change the default email address to your email that is used in you Wordpress User setting.
5. Subscribe via email link
Theres an email icon on top. You can use this as a link for feed subscription via email. Get you SUBSCRIPTION LINK from you Feedburner dashboard (or any other services). NOT SUBSCRIPTION FORM.
Open header.php and replace the phrase “Subscribe via email” with the code. Then you may want to edit the text that appear, into a shorter one. If you dont want this, you can use this icon as a contact information, say, put your email there.
6. Choose either 2 or 3 colums
This is not any complex method or anything. In fact it is just a recommendation on how you can manipulate the 3 widgetized sidebar in Freicurv in order to make your blog into 2 or 3 columns. View the complete Freicurv visual strucure here.
To achieve a normal 3-column layout, you just fill up the 3 given sidebars widget - Sidebar 1, Sidebar 2 and Sidebar 3(optional). The demo site is using this method so you view the example there.
To achieve a 2-column layout, you can simply ignore Sidebar 1 and Sidebar 2, and fill up all your widgets inside Sidebar 3. See a screenshot of a 2 columns Freicurv. I leave 2 widgets into Sidebar 1 and Sidebar 2 there; just to help you visualize the position of those, hopefully.

17 JAN 2008 - Version 1.5 fixes - Pagination in search result is added, Sidebar 3 in search result is added, Edit Post fucntion(as explian in previous change) is added, CSS conflict with Brian threaded plugin is fixed. Thanks to Jay Thompson for pointing out about the search result problems.
07 DEC 2007 - Edit post when author logged in - There’s one comment by jgc asking whether is it possible to add the ‘Edit Post’ link when the owner logged in. Actually, yes - and it can be done easily. Making stuff much easier, you can download these .txt files and paste the code inside the corresponding .php files - For single.php and index.php. Btw, the Edit Post link for single view appears on the sidebar
04 DEC 2007 - For Brian’s Threaded Comment Plugin users - Apparently, theres is a class conflict between Freicurv and that particular plugin. It only affect the comment icon on the main and single page. Not really a major conflict, but it is visually weird. To fix it, open up style.css and look for the following code.
I dont want to waste your time. Just download this style.css file and replace the default one.
Also, if you have problem with you sidebar in singe post view after using this plugin, please download this single.php and replace the old one text file single.txt and copy everything into single.php. It just a one word fix but it is much easier this way.
03 DEC 2007 - Previous Entries and Next Entries not working - I figured this out when playing with the Demo just now. The Pagination is not working. But now it is fixed already. The changes only occur in index.php. Please download the latest package. This also affect the way to create the Asides category. Please read the updated readme.txt included.

@kolaj : I tested this theme with older and latest version of wordpress - no error like that. What version are you using? maybe theres some incompatible plugins in your wordpress. Im not sure.

18 Dec 07 | 8:19 amDid find an incompatability with the NextGEN Gallery though. One of the files in this uses the class tags ‘prev’ and ‘next’ so the Previous and Next links overlay the arrow. A quick fix for me was to alter the class tag in the theme (in style.css and index.php) to be something unique (I chose to put fr in front of them so prev became frprev etc.)
I love this theme and want to download but it keeps redirecting me to freicurv_v1.1.rar which turns into gibberish on my screen and doesn’t download a zip file. Is it a problem on my end?

I really dig your theme and have attempted to use it on a site I am starting (feralblog.com). Unfortuneatly, on single pages, the sidebar gets pushed below the content. I haven’t touched the css and have tested this on mac and pc with various browsers. Either I’m doing something really stupid (I’d give odds on that) or something is wonky in the css. Any suggestions? Hope you can help me out, but if not, thanks for releasing this to the community!

For ex., if my category id is say, 21, should I change

*Fabulous* theme!! I’ve got it running on my blog now. One question, when you use the Search function, it returns appropriate posts, however if there are more than 5 posts (or however many you’ve set WP to display on the home page) there is no “previous” link to get to the next posts meeting the search criteria. (you can see this by searching for “Phoenix” on my blog — it should return hundreds of posts). Also Sidebar 3 disappears on the search results page. Is that by design?

i was wondering.. if it’s possible to add a ‘dont display aside posts that are 2 weeks/1 month old” for lazy people that dont write much asides? maybe it is possible with some php, which i’m not that good at. it could disable the whole asides section that way…

How come it doesn’t detect that I am logged in as admin? In other themes, when am logged in as admin, I didn’t have to enter my name, email, website etc. before I could comment.

flisterz: trackback_rdf() below the_content() in index.php should be enclosed in HTML comments.
Also, it would be nice if you can include a ‘edit’ link for posts in single.php in your next theme upgrade. It’s simple to do.

It would be great if hard returns in the comment editor left a space between lines. I frequently get some lengthy comments on my blog and they get difficult to read without having white space breaks between paragraphs. Is this something that can be done easily?

29 Jan 08 | 6:41 amNow another question… track/pingbacks don’t seem to be showing up in my posts. Trackbacks that were made before i switched to this theme are there, but no new trackbacks. They show up in my WP Dashboard, but are nowhere to be found in the post comments. I did add some code to comments.pho to separate the comments and trackbacks, but even if I take that code out — none show up. Any ideas?
Oh, I did add the code from “How to Tutorials” shown above to fix the issues with not displaying when you are logged in. Could something in that code be preventing trackbacks from showing up? (sorry, I’m a noob when it comes to php and WP themes…)

The german sentence means “Do not edit this page”. Maybe that is a simple issue, but i have never seen that before.
@dieter: that is a wordpress page. I never include any Archive page in my theme, and nothing to do with the theme. you may want to check your pages or any plugins. or try redownload the theme.
