Square Enix is bringing its blockchain game Symbiogenesis to Soneium—an Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs.
The move comes as Symbiogenesis approaches the end of its planned content, with the final chapter scheduled for release in July. Despite the game’s conclusion, Square Enix has introduced a time-limited campaign on Soneium that connects Symbiogenesis with other blockchain-based games.
The expansion allows players to earn blockchain-based digital items by completing in-game objectives before May 31. These items are designed to offer features that carry over into two other titles operating on the Soneium network.

What is Soneium?
Soneium is an Ethereum layer-2 network launched by Sony Block Solutions Labs, a collaboration between Sony Group Corporation and the blockchain development firm Startale Group.
Built on the Op Stack from the Optimism Foundation, Soneium is fully EVM-compatible, making it accessible for developers looking to build and scale high-volume applications and not directly linked to Sony’s PlayStation brand or console platforms.
Whilst Square Enix and Sony have worked together in the past, particularly through PlayStation-exclusive game releases, this latest development is not described as a formal partnership between the companies.

What’s next for Symbiogenesis?
Symbiogenesis was launched by Square Enix on the Polygon blockchain and has been released in episodic chapters. The current storyline is set to conclude in July, marking what Square Enix has called the final season of the project. There has been no confirmation from Square Enix about a sequel or further development beyond the existing chapters.
As part of the new campaign, Symbiogenesis now features quests that reward players with blockchain tokens that can be used in Sleepagotchi—a sleep-focused game with tracking elements—and Evermoon, a competitive multiplayer game.
To qualify for the new Soneium-linked campaign, players must complete epilogues from the game’s first four chapters by May 31.
